Protecting Cedar Mountain from Wildfires

Duck Creek Fuels Reduction Project will also restore forest's health and beauty

Change is coming to the Duck Creek area, starting this summer.

I'm a Kane County resident myself, and I know that when someone - especially a "federale," as they like to call us across the border in Arizona - says something like that, it's usually a cue for you old-timers' eyebrows and blood pressure levels to shoot upwards.

But in this case it should bring smiles and sighs of relief - really.
The Dixie National Forest's Cedar City Ranger District will begin work on the

Duck Creek Fuels Reduction Project this summer, starting an eight-year process that will ultimately make for a safer, healthier and more beautiful forest for area residents and visitors.

The Dixie - working in cooperation with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, Kane County and the Cedar Mountain Fire Protection District - will reduce fuel loads on almost 12,000 acres of National Forest System lands around Duck Creek through timber harvests, mechanical thinning and prescribed burning.

The project's emphasis is on reducing fuels, restoring shade-tolerant tree species, and reducing the risk of large, intense wildland

News From Swains Creek

Cont'd on page 2

We are preparing for our Annual Labor Day festivities.  After much discussion, it was decided that we would ask for ten volunteers for fire pit duty - volunteers need gloves and usually have a two hour shift.  If we do not have enough volunteers, we will have a pot luck dinner without the pit bar-b-que this year.  We also need 25 volunteers for Camp Golden Eagle.  People are needed to sign up kids, count frogs, measure fish, oversee the horseshoe contests, teach archery, cook hot dogs for lunch, teach arts and crafts, assist with the obstacle course, oversee the ball toss, etc.  If we do not have enough volunteers, we will eliminate some of the activities.

Please call Cheryl Case at 702-595-5900, or email cheryl@comnett.net by July 10th to volunteer, and put 'swains' in the subject box. :-).  Volunteering for an hour or two truly makes a difference !

It's time!  Volunteer Now
